Some books arrive with impeccable literary credentials. Others arrive with glowing reviews from serious newspapers. And then there are books like Swagbelly, which stroll into the room wearing a slightly questionable jacket, grin unapologetically, and dare you not to pick them up.

DJ Levien’s Swagbelly – A Pornographer’s Tale is one of those gloriously awkward novels that refuses to fit neatly into any respectable category. Published by Allison & Busby in 2002, it blends satire, dark humour, crime, social observation and more than a healthy dose of absurdity into a story that cheerfully wanders through the less glamorous corners of the entertainment industry. If you’ve ever wondered what happens when ambition collides head-first with bad decisions, eccentric characters and the sort of career that makes family gatherings unnecessarily complicated, this may well provide the answer.

The title naturally grabs attention, but don’t be fooled into assuming this is simply an exercise in shock value. Levien is far more interested in the peculiar people orbiting his protagonist than in easy sensationalism. The novel skewers vanity, greed, desperation and human folly with an eye that is often surprisingly affectionate. Almost everyone is chasing success, respectability or fortune, and almost everyone seems determined to take the scenic route through chaos.

What makes the book particularly entertaining is its refusal to judge its cast too harshly. Heroes are flawed, villains are occasionally sympathetic, and the supporting characters often threaten to steal the entire show simply by turning up and behaving exactly as common sense would advise against. It’s the literary equivalent of watching someone confidently assemble flat-pack furniture without reading the instructions—you know disaster is coming, but somehow you can’t look away.

Our copy is in Good condition, which seems entirely appropriate for a novel that delights in celebrating life’s rough edges. It has clearly been read and enjoyed but remains perfectly presentable, with plenty more laughs, raised eyebrows and moments of "surely they didn’t just..." left to offer its next owner. Like many of the best stories, a little wear merely suggests it’s already had an interesting life.

As with every volume sold by Crappy Old Books, this isn’t simply another second-hand novel rescued from obscurity. It’s another traveller continuing its peculiar journey from one curious reader to the next. Somewhere, someone has already chuckled at its outrageous situations, winced at its social disasters and quietly appreciated that beneath the irreverence lies a surprisingly sharp observation of human nature.

So if your literary tastes lean towards the unconventional, if you enjoy novels that cheerfully poke fun at society’s pretensions, or if you simply like stories populated by wonderfully imperfect people making spectacularly questionable choices, Swagbelly deserves a place on your shelf. It may not be the sort of book you’d leave strategically displayed during a visit from your maiden aunt, but then again, life would be considerably duller if every novel behaved itself.
